Professional profile

Mr James Metcalfe is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in foot and ankle surgery, complex lower limb trauma and children’s orthopaedics.

 

James graduated from Birmingham University Medical School in 1993 and after completing house jobs, he taught undergraduate medical students at Sheffield University Medical School. Basic surgical training was carried out at the North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary where he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons.

 

His orthopaedic training was based at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital in Oswestry, which is a specialist unit, as well as the major Trauma Centre in Stoke-on-Trent. His training was in Foot and Ankle Surgery and Children’s Orthopaedics and he completed the FRCS Trauma and Orthopaedics.

 

His National Fellowship in Paediatric Orthopaedics was completed at the Sheffield Children’s Hospital, and a year was spent dealing with complex limb deformity, cerebral palsy and children’s trauma.

 

James was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon at Derriford Hospital and Plymouth Nuffield Hospitals in 2006 and he treats foot and ankle conditions for adults as well as children. These conditions include bunions, painful feet, stiff and painful ankles. Complex lower limb deformity is another of his areas using specialist techniques and James still treats patients with cerebral palsy and hip conditions in children.

 

In addition to his clinical job, James is committed to education, teaching and examinations for medical students at the Peninsula Medical School. He has also committed to sharing his skills with overseas hospitals.

 

Most of his professional life has been spent in the north, including Sheffield, Stoke, Shrewsbury and Oswestry.  It is with some pleasure therefore that he has been able to move nearer the sea to take up his passion of sailing. When he is not sailing James enjoys gardening, mountain biking and being with his three young children.
